The masseter muscles, located on either side of the jaw, play an important role in everyday functions such as chewing, speaking and clenching the teeth. These muscles are among the strongest muscles in the body relative to their size and are heavily involved in jaw movement and bite force.
In some individuals, the masseter muscles may become overactive, tense, or enlarged. This can occur as a result of habitual jaw clenching, teeth grinding (also known as bruxism), stress-related muscle activity, or other factors affecting the jaw joint and surrounding muscles. When this happens, people may experience symptoms such as jaw soreness, facial tension, headaches, or discomfort around the temporomandibular joint (TMJ).
Jaw clenching and teeth grinding may occur during the day or at night and can sometimes place ongoing strain on the jaw muscles and joints. Over time, this muscle activity may contribute to tightness in the lower face, jaw fatigue, and tension in nearby areas such as the temples or neck.
A consultation allows our team to assess your concerns, discuss your symptoms, and review your medical and dental history. During this appointment we can talk through possible contributing factors, provide education about jaw muscle activity, and discuss appropriate management options where suitable.
If you experience frequent jaw tension, grinding, or TMJ-related discomfort, a professional assessment can help determine whether the masseter muscles or surrounding structures may be contributing to your symptoms.
